Veganomicon

Veganomicon

by
Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero

This is the first (and only, so far) cookbook by these two authors that I own.  Other cookbooks by them include Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, Vegan with a Vengeance, Vegan Brunch.  (A review of this latter cookbook is available by Vegan Dad.)

It is a very thorough cookbook, with chapters for everything from snacks to sandwiches to entrees to breads to cookies to desserts.   The hardcover edition is just shy of 300 pages.  Later this fall, a paperback edition will be published, which will significantly reduce the cost of this cookbook.

Besides labeling recipes with many of the common labels (30 minutes or less, low fat, etc), Isa and Terry include a category of Grocery Store Ingredients, meaning the ingredients in the given recipe can all be obtained in "regular" grocery stores, and do not require a trip to a health food store.  As someone living in a very rural area that only has a handful of REGULAR grocery stores, I appreciate this categorization!

Along with recipes of every imaginable type, most recipes also have a paragraph or two describing them in Isa's and Terry's inimitable, quirky style.

For example, introducing the Chickpeas Romesco recipe (shown below with the addition of some black beans--I only had one can of chickpeas and the recipe calls for two!), the authors write:

If these chickpeas could talk, they'd probably be a little fresh and need at least a PG-13 rating due to extreme sauciness.  (On the other hand, if chickpeas could talk, they probably wouldn't be vegan anymore.)

This dish is wonderful ... combining the flavors of Fire Roasted Tomatoes with Roasted Red Peppers for the sauce.  Utterly fantastic when served over rice.

Their Lemon Pound Cake (a variation on the main recipe --- Vanilla Yogurt Pound Cake) is moist, dense, rich and delicious ... just like a pound cake should be!!
