Barbecued Grilled Tofu

Barbequed Grilled Tofu

I was always disappointed with any attempts at making barbequed tofu. It always ended up tasting like barbeque sauce sitting on top of tasteless, bland tofu!

Then I found this post by Vegan Dad. The rub makes ALL the difference! The tofu gets infused with all the rub's ingredients, then the step of simmering the tofu in the BBQ sauce just tops it off, flavor-wise.

I've tried a variety of BBQ sauces. The one posted by Vegan Dad along with this recipe is quick, easy, and very tasty. He also has a sticky type of BBQ sauce, posted here. Another tasty sauce is posted by Bryanna Clark Grogan here (I add about 1/4 cup brown sugar to Bryanna's recipe to get it to the sweetness I like).

Rub Ingredients

4 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. seasoned salt
2 tsp. onion powder
2 tsp. fresh ground black pepper
Cayenne pepper to taste

Brenda's notes:   I skipped the pepper (I don't use that in anything).

Instead of 4 tsp. regular paprika, I used 2 tsp. smoked paprika and 2 tsp. regular paprika.

Having a very tender palate, I also skipped the cayenne pepper.

Mix up the rub. Slice extra firm tofu into 1/2" thick slices and coat each side with the rub. Generally, I just pan fry on each side till crispy, and pour on more BBQ sauce, and simmer, covered for 10 minutes or so.

However, you can grill the tofu, using a "backyard-type" of grill, or use a stove top grill, or a counter top, electric grill.

In that case, once heated thru on the grill, transfer to a pan with the BBQ sauce hot and simmering, and simmer the slices for 10 minutes or so.
